CONTRACTOR FIELD GUIDE

A certificate is evidence—not an endorsement

A certificate of insurance summarizes policy information. It does not itself change coverage or make the certificate holder an additional insured. That distinction matters when a job depends on paperwork.

FIELD NOTES

Start with the request

Collect the certificate holder’s legal name, address, project details, deadline and exact contract insurance language.

FIELD NOTES

Review the endorsements

Additional insured status, completed operations, primary and noncontributory wording and waivers of subrogation are separate requirements. Confirm which forms the insurer can provide.

FIELD NOTES

Check the underlying policy

The requested work must fall within the insured operations. Endorsements do not automatically undo exclusions or create coverage for an undisclosed trade.

FIELD NOTES

Allow time for approval

Some requests can be handled under existing policy provisions; others need insurer review or an additional charge. Do not promise a certificate before coverage and wording are confirmed.
