COVERAGE, EXPLAINED

California contractor license and contract bonds

A contractor license bond and a project performance bond serve different purposes. Start by identifying the bond your license, entity or contract actually requires.

THE DETAILS THAT MATTER

Keep license and project obligations clear.

The standard California contractor license bond amount is $25,000. The bond amount is not the premium you pay.

LLC licensees have additional requirements, including a separate employee/worker bond and liability insurance requirements. Review the current CSLB rules.

Bid, performance and payment bonds are project obligations. Underwriting can require financial statements, work history and information about the contract.

Read the coverage boundaries.

A surety bond does not replace insurance protecting your business. If a surety pays a valid claim, indemnity obligations may require you to reimburse it.

A common question

No. A license bond protects eligible claimants under its terms. General liability addresses covered claims against your business, and the two are not interchangeable.
