COVERAGE, EXPLAINED

California workers’ compensation for contractors

Workers’ compensation addresses covered employee work injuries and occupational illness. For contractors, the right application starts with the work your people perform, the payroll assigned to it and your CSLB license classification.

THE DETAILS THAT MATTER

Your crew. Your payroll. Your license.

Describe each employee’s duties and separate payroll records where the classification rules allow. CSLB license classifications and workers’ comp payroll class codes are different systems.

Review owner and officer treatment, subcontractors, prior losses and any experience modification before choosing a program.

California employers must carry workers’ compensation. Some contractor license classifications also require coverage without employees; check the current CSLB requirements for your situation.

Read the coverage boundaries.

Workers’ compensation does not replace general liability, commercial auto or tools coverage. Owner inclusion and exclusion are subject to eligibility and policy terms.

A common question

An exemption is not available to every licensee. Certain classifications require coverage without employees, and an RME can also affect eligibility. Verify your current classification and business setup with CSLB before relying on an exemption.
